HIV Serostatus Unlikely to Influence HbA1c Levels in People Living with HIV, Study Finds

29 May 2024 • Clinical guidelines recommend screening for diabetes in PLWH, but there is no agreed method due to earlier studies reporting HbA1c is falsely low in PLWH.

In a study conducted in Brighton, U.K., researchers investigated the influence of HIV serostatus on HbA1c levels in people living with HIV (PLWH) compared to HIV-negative individuals.

Despite previous concerns about HbA1c accuracy in PLWH, particularly due to older antiretroviral therapy, the study found no significant influence of HIV serostatus on HbA1c levels, suggesting that HbA1c remains a reliable marker for glycemic assessment in PLWH.

These findings support the integration of HbA1c into routine clinical practice for this population.
