Women on Dialysis Face Higher Risk of Cardiovascular Events, Yet Lower Mortality Rates Than Men
6 May 2024 • A sweeping study evaluating over 500,000 patients initiating dialysis revealed that women face a 14% higher risk of cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke, compared to men, despite having a lower risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.
While women exhibited a 16% higher risk of heart failure and a staggering 31% higher risk of stroke, they showed no significant difference in the risk of acute coronary syndrome.
These findings shed light on the gender-specific nuances in cardiovascular risk among dialysis patients, highlighting the need for tailored interventions to mitigate disparities in outcomes.
