Metformin Effectively Slows Diabetes-Related Kidney Complications

12 Jul 2024 • Metformin treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes was associated with a decreased risk of renal function decline. It helps in managing diabetes-related kidney complications.

A retrospective observational multicenter cohort study investigated the renoprotective effects of metformin in 316,693 patients with type 2 diabetes from seven hospitals. Metformin group had better renal outcomes compared to the non-metformin group with lower incidence of doubling of serum creatinine (HR 0.71), eGFR ≤ 15 mL/min/1.73 m² (HR 0.61), and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) (HR 0.55).
