Asia Faces Colorectal Cancer Spike as BMI Levels Climb

29 Aug 2024 • In the The Asia Cohort Consortium study, a strong link between elevated body mass index (BMI) and increased risks of colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality in Asia was confirmed.

Analyzing data from over 1.2 million participants, researchers found that higher BMI significantly raised the likelihood of developing CRC and dying from it, with risk escalating with BMI levels above 25.0.

The study also points to a stronger association between BMI and colon cancer compared to rectal cancer. The risk was more pronounced in men than women.

These findings underscore the growing impact of obesity on CRC and suggest a need for targeted prevention strategies in the Asian population.
