Thiazide Diuretics and Hyponatremia: A Risk Worth Monitoring in Hypertension Treatment
19 Dec 2023 • Treatment initiation with thiazide diuretics suggests a more substantial excess risk for hyponatremia, particularly during the first months of treatment.
A recent study involving over 180,000 individuals revealed that adults who utilized thiazide diuretics to manage hypertension were at a higher risk of developing hyponatremia within the first two years of initiating treatment compared to those who opted for nonthiazide agents.
Overall, older age and a greater number of comorbidities increased the cumulative hyponatremia in new users of thiazide-based hypertensives.
Clinicians should be aware of the potential development of hyponatremia and monitor and address the electrolyte abnormalities, the researchers concluded.
