Men with Low Birthweight and Young Adult Overweight Face Substantial Type 2 Diabetes Risk
23 Feb 2024 • Low birthweight and overweight in young adulthood are the major developmental determinants of adult type 2 diabetes risk in men.
- In men, birthweight below the median (<3.6 kg) and being overweight at age 20 (BMI >25 kg/m2) significantly increased the risk of both early (≤59.4 years) and late (>59.4 years) onset type 2 diabetes.
- A combination of low birthweight & young adult overweight posed a substantial risk, with a particularly alarming ninefold increase in early T2D risk for those with birthweight ≤2.5 kg and overweight at age 20 (HR 9.94).
