Relaxed Glycemic Control Safe for Seniors, Study Finds No Infection Surge
23 Oct 2024 • Older patients with type 2 diabetes who achieve relaxed glycemic control levels endorsed by clinical guidelines are not at significantly increased risk of hospitalization for most infections, found new research.
In a large study of over 103,000 seniors with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that relaxed glycemic control (HbA1c 7% to <9%) poses no significant risk for hospitalization due to infections compared to intensive control (HbA1c 6% to <7%).
Only those at the higher end of relaxed control (HbA1c 8% to <9%) showed an increased risk for skin, soft tissue, and bone infections (adjusted RR 1.33).
Overall, relaxed glycemic control levels appear safe for most infections, but caution is warranted for specific infection types.
