Avian Flu Outbreak - Prevention Guidelines Issued by the Kerala Government

18 Jun 2024 • Several cases of avian influenza were detected in ducks and crows in Cherthala, Kerala, following which the state health department released certain guidelines in a meeting involving the health minister Veena George and the rapid response team to prevent the spread of the infection. According to the prevention guidelines,

  • Those involved in bird care or the avian sector will be under continuous surveillance.

  • It is crucial not to handle dead or diseased birds with bare hands.

  • Public awareness initiatives about the disease will be prioritized.

  • Individuals showing signs of bird flu will be closely monitored.

  • Any bird deaths must be reported promptly to the health department.

  • Eggs and bird meat should be thoroughly cooked before consumption to ensure safety.
