NMC Issues Antibiotic Prescription Guidelines for Doctors in Medical Institutions
21 Jun 2024 • The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a set of guidelines on antibiotic prescriptions for doctors to curb antimicrobial resistance. This 156-page guideline is termed the ‘National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) Module for Prescribers’.

Quickly assessing and diagnosing clinical issues at the bedside aids in determining the need for antimicrobials. Evaluating symptoms and signs guide the identification of infections like URTI, LRTI, UTI, meningitis, diarrhea, and skin infections.

Respiratory and viral infections do not need antibiotics. If the patient exhibits pneumonia symptoms sputum tests must be conducted and antibiotics can be prescribed.

Empiric antimicrobials can be initiated for UTIs in certain cases like pregnancy, diabetes, etc.
