Parental T2D Doubles Risk of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Study Shows
23 Sept 2024 • A new study finds that children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) were nearly twice as likely to have parents with type 2 diabetes, (T2D), with a relative risk of 1.88 (P < 0.001) compared to those without diabetes.
Among the 3,603 T1D children examined, those with a family history of T2D were also found to be more likely to be overweight or obese.
These findings suggest that a familial link to T2D, along with increased body weight, may elevate the risk of developing T1D in children.
