Diabetes Before 30? Young Diabetics Face Heightened Risk of CV Complications, Kidney Failure & Mortality
24 Dec 2024 • Patients with young-onset diabetes are at high risk of cardiovascular complications, kidney failure, and death, warns a new study.
- Analyzing data from over half a million people aged ≤30, those with type 1 diabetes (T1D) faced a 6.76-fold higher risk of myocardial infarction and 4.65 times higher risk of stroke, while type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients had a 5.07-fold and 3.30-fold increase, respectively, compared to the general population.
- Kidney failure was most prominent in T1D (HR 20.92) compared to T2D (HR 2.78).
- Mortality rates were also elevated, with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients showing a mortality risk 3 to 4 times higher than non-diabetic individuals.
- Notably, those under 20 with T2D had the highest mortality risk, highlighting the urgent need for targeted healthcare interventions in this vulnerable group.
