WHO Launches Groundbreaking Clinical Guideline for Adult Tobacco Cessation Treatment

3 Jul 2024 • WHO recommends various interventions for tobacco cessation, including behavioral support, digital tools, and medications. The guideline targets the 750+ million people worldwide seeking to quit tobacco in all forms.

  • It emphasizes combining pharmacotherapy with behavioral interventions to enhance success rates in quitting tobacco use. Recommended treatments include varenicline, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), bupropion, and cytisine.

  • Behavioral interventions, such as brief health worker counseling and more intensive support (individual, group, or phone counseling), are recommended alongside pharmacotherapy. Digital interventions like text messaging and smartphone apps are also encouraged as supportive tools for tobacco cessation.

  • WHO urges healthcare providers, policymakers, and stakeholders worldwide to adopt and implement these guidelines to facilitate tobacco cessation and improve public health globally.
