New Study Confirms: Gestational Diabetes Raises Women's Dementia Risk
18 Apr 2024 • Over a 45-year follow-up period, a recent UK Biobank study revealed that women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) face a 67% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those without GDM.
Type 2 diabetes was found to account for 34.5% of the mediating effect on this relationship, followed by coronary heart disease (8.4%), chronic kidney disease (5.2%), and comorbidities (18.8%).
Notably, physical activity appeared to modify the association between GDM and dementia, with physically inactive women showing a significant link, while no association was observed among physically active counterparts.
