Risk of Heart Failure and Rehospitalization Rises After Hospital Discharge Due to Sepsis

2 Feb 2023 • Published on the 1st of February, 2023 A recent study by Jentzer et al published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) sheds light on the association between sepsis and post-discharge complications, specifically cardiovascular events. The study is the largest to date and analysed data from 2.3 million hospitalised individuals over a decade. The results indicate that patients with sepsis are at a higher risk for all-cause mortality, rehospitalization, and cardiovascular rehospitalization both early and late after discharge. Furthermore, sepsis patients face a higher risk of both atherosclerotic and non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular events compared to those without sepsis. The findings emphasise the need for better post-discharge care and monitoring of sepsis patients to prevent adverse events and improve their long-term outcomes.
