18 Oct 2023 • 🔊Is there a Doctor on board?
You are 40,000 feet above the ground, soaring the blue skies, decide to sit back and stretch, and enjoy the rest of your flight, when you suddenly hear this spine-chilling announcement!😰
🗣️Is there a Doctor on board?
🗣️We have a medical emergency!
🗣️Do we have a Doctor on board?
There are more than 4 billion air travellers annually and In-flight medical events occur at a rate of 1 per 604 flights. ✈️
Well, this happens more often than we think and we need to step up!
Agreeably, this situation involves a lot of anxiety and the environment is not convenient for both the patient and the Doctor on board.😓
There is lack of help, equipment and infrastructure in this already uncomfortable and unfamiliar environment.😕
Understandably there is also a fear of failure and litigation, and to make things worse, both the patient and the passengers expect a miracle, especially in the presence of a Doctor.😇
Let's face it, we can't really blame them for feeling this way...movies can have that effect.
First things first:
The cabin crew are right there with you. They are well- trained for basic medical emergencies and can assist you along every step of the way.🤵♂️🤵♀️
Then follow the Emergency Care Provider's Checklist:📋
- Introduce yourself
- Continue further, only after receiving the passenger's consent
- Ask for a translator, if needed
- Keep written records
- Ask for the EMK (Emergency Medical Kit)
- If passenger is critical, ask for a GBMS (Ground Base Medical Support) or diversion.
From treating an allergy to delivering a baby, we can be summoned anytime.
So the question is:
Are you prepared for such an emergency?
Don't worry...we have got you covered!🤗
