NICE conditionally recommends eight digitally enabled therapies for adult depression and anxiety treatment

1 Mar 2023 • One in six people report experiencing mental health problems such as anxiety and depression each week in England, according to NHS Digital, and there is high demand for NHS talking therapies, with some individuals waiting up to six weeks for help.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has initiated a consultation on the use of eight digitally enabled therapies to treat depression and anxiety in adults, including conditions such as PTSD and body dysmorphia. The therapies utilise cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques and involve the support of an NHS Talking Therapies clinician.

The digitally enabled therapies have been conditionally recommended while further evidence is gathered. Six technologies were recommended to treat adults with anxiety disorders, while three online CBT programs were recommended for the treatment of depression. The technologies were recommended following an assessment with an NHS Talking Therapies therapist, as they may not be the right choice for everyone.
