Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as a sudden decline in kidney function, which includes both structural damage) and functional impairment. It involves a sharp rise in serum creatinine, a decline in urine output, or sometimes both. AKI is known to occur in between 10% and 15% of hospitalised patients and more than 50% of patients need intensive care.
